The Scenic Roads of the Amalfi Coast The Routes That Make the Journey Worthwhile

September 22, 2026 By Bellarome Travel

On many journeys, the road simply serves to reach the place you came to see.

On the Amalfi Coast, the opposite happens. The route becomes one of the main experiences. Every bend reveals the landscape a little at a time, villages appear across the mountainside, and the sea continually changes position – first ahead of you, then below, then hidden behind the rock before returning a few minutes later.

You are not simply traveling along a coastline. You are entering the way it has been built and inhabited.

The road tells the story of a difficult terrain, the ingenuity required to live within it, and the constant relationship among villages, mountains and the Mediterranean.

The SS163: a ribbon between rock and sea

The SS163 Amalfitana is the symbolic road of the coast.

It follows the shape of the mountains, passes through the principal towns and links landscapes that feel far more distant than the mileage suggests. Its beauty comes from the constant proximity of rock and sea, but also from the unpredictability of each panoramic opening.

One bend may reveal a bay. The next may show an entire village. A few moments later, the view may reach a promontory, a watchtower or a cultivated terrace.

Driving the SS163 is not only about collecting views. It means accepting the rhythm of the coast. Distances are measured less in miles than in curves, pauses, traffic and the desire to keep looking.

From Vietri to Cetara: the first encounter with the landscape

Approaching from Salerno, Vietri sul Mare introduces the Amalfi Coast through color.

Ceramics appear on domes, facades, courtyards and along the streets. Then the landscape begins to tighten, and the coastline gradually takes on its more vertical form.

As the road continues toward Cetara, the sea accompanies the route while the settlements become more intimate. Cetara retains the character of a fishing village, with houses gathered around the harbor, a small beach and a tower overlooking the shoreline.

This stretch is an ideal reminder that the Amalfi Coast is not made only of its most famous destinations. Between one town and the next are small harbors, towers, beaches and viewpoints that change the tone of the journey.

From Amalfi to Praiano: the theater of the rock

Beyond Amalfi, the road enters one of its most dramatic sections.

Rock walls draw closer, homes appear to occupy impossible spaces and the sea opens through ever-changing gaps. Conca dei Marini, Furore and Praiano do not feel separate from the landscape. They seem to have been built inside it.

Here, the road crosses bridges, inlets and promontories. The view is never uniform. It may be wide and luminous, then suddenly enclosed between high cliffs.

Praiano offers some of the coast’s most beautiful western views, extending toward Positano, the Li Galli islands, Punta Campanella and Capri. This part of the route deserves time, especially when the light softens and shadows begin to define the mountains.

From Praiano to Positano: the journey west

As you approach Positano, the landscape takes on a different theatrical quality.

The town does not always appear all at once. It reveals itself through bends, vegetation and openings in the road. Then the colorful houses begin to occupy the slope and Positano’s vertical form becomes increasingly clear.

The arrival is part of the experience. Positano seems to prepare travelers for its complexity: first the view from above, then the roads and stairways, and finally the level of the sea.

Traveling this stretch in the late afternoon allows you to watch the western light transform facades, vegetation and water.

This is not merely a road to Positano. It is the way Positano begins.

The climb to Ravello: changing perspective

Leaving the shoreline for a while and climbing toward Ravello completely changes the point of view.

The sea moves farther away, but the landscape becomes broader. Houses appear smaller, the line of the coast becomes easier to read, and the relationship among mountains, terraces and villages emerges with greater clarity.

Ravello stands high above the water and is celebrated as a natural terrace overlooking the Amalfi Coast. The ascent prepares you for its calmer, more contemplative atmosphere.

The road does not lead only to another destination. It leads to another emotional distance from the sea.

Tramonti and the Valico di Chiunzi: the inland coast

The best-known face of the Amalfi Coast looks toward the sea, but a different landscape exists behind it.

The roads toward Tramonti and the Valico di Chiunzi cross a more mountainous and rural environment. The vegetation changes, views open toward the interior and the rhythm becomes less coastal.

The Valico di Chiunzi is a historic mountain pass in the Lattari range, long used to connect the coast with the countryside beyond it.

This detour reveals that the Amalfi Coast does not live only along the shoreline. Part of its identity begins in hills, vineyards, small settlements and old routes linking the sea to inland communities.

Enjoying the route without turning it into a challenge

The beauty of the Amalfi Coast road requires attention.

The lanes can be narrow, traffic changes significantly with the season and time of day, and the length of a journey cannot always be predicted from the distance alone. Looking constantly for parking or concentrating on the road can take attention away from the experience itself.

A private transfer with a driver who knows the area can therefore transform the day. It allows travelers to look at the scenery, plan realistic stops and adapt the route to the season and local conditions.

It is also important to stop only where permitted and not to treat every beautiful bend as an improvised viewpoint.

The road should be experienced slowly, but also respectfully.

The journey that remains between one stop and the next

Classic Amalfi Coast can make these roads a central part of the itinerary: a private journey along the SS163, an ascent to Ravello, a detour into the hills or a day combining the road with time on the water. Book your Amalfi Coast getaway today and embark on a journey of discovery!
